In der Nachkriegssowjetunion war der Besitz von Alben mit populärer Musik, insbesondere Rock oder Jazz aus dem Westen, verboten. Studenten, die mit derartigem Schmuggelgut erwischt wurden, mussten mit einer Suspendierung oder sogar mit dem Ausschluss von ihrer Schule oder Universität rechnen. Einigen drohte sogar Gefängnis oder die Einweisung in ein Arbeitslager. Um dem entgegenzuwirken, entwickelten einige findige russische Tontechniker eine Möglichkeit, das Verbot zu umgehen: Sie kopierten Alben auf Röntgenfilme, die sie vom Krankenhauspersonal erhielten, das den "Müll" entsorgen wollte. Diese auf einem normalen Plattenspieler abspielbaren und leichter zu schmuggelnden Röntgenfilmplatten - Spitznamen wie "Rippen", "Musik auf Knochen" und "Knochen" - wurden bis zum Aufkommen der Audiokassette zu einer heißen Ware auf dem Schwarzmarkt. Ribs nimmt eine Auswahl dieser sowjetischen Aufnahmen und gibt ihnen ihre ursprüngliche Funktion zurück: die Darstellung auf dem Röntgenbildschirm eines Arztes. Eine originale Rippenplatte wird einmal am Tag auf einem durchsichtigen Plattenspieler abgespielt.
